Custom software development in Sunderland

I build tools your own staff log in to, in place of paper forms and shared spreadsheets.

I offer custom software development to businesses in Sunderland, the North East and across the UK: tools for your own staff. The job sheets, timesheets, checks and spreadsheets that slow your team down become one tool they log in to. I lead every project, so the person you brief is the person you keep dealing with.

Before I ran my business full time, I worked in IT at Hays Travel, and before that I helped roll out EPoS systems at SPARK EPoS. How I got here.

What is custom software?

Custom software is a tool built around how your business works, used by your own staff. It's one of three things people often mix up:

ServiceWhat it isWho uses it
Custom software (this page)A new tool built for your teamYour own staff
Web appsSomething your customers log in to: portals, booking, accountsYour customers
Business automationThe tools you already have, connected so jobs happen on their ownNobody logs in. It runs in the background

For your customers, see apps your customers use. If your tools are fine but don't talk to each other, see connecting the tools you already have.

Jobs it takes off your team

Bespoke software development starts with one question: what does your team still do on paper or in a spreadsheet? These custom business tools are examples:

  • Job and quote management.Every job in one place, not spread across notebooks and texts.
  • Timesheets. They add themselves up at the end of the week.
  • Vehicle and safety checks.Filled in on a phone, with a copy saved every time.
  • A dashboard. The numbers you check each week, on one screen.
  • Back-office tools. In place of the shared spreadsheet everyone keeps overwriting.

Software I've built

Staff tools I built for clients, and one for my own business:

Fibretec: a staff forms system

Fibretec's engineers did job reports, timesheets and vehicle checks on paper. I built them a password-protected forms system for all of it, plus signatures, compliance checks, expense claims and PPE requests. Every form ends in the same PDF layout.

MYOS: my own SEO system

MYOS runs my own site's SEO. It pulls in live Search Console data, gives me a fix list for each page, and updates a title, meta description or image alt text in one click.

Smart Payment Solutions: a POS Asset Generator

Paul pastes in a product list, and this private tool makes one clean image for each product, sized for his till and ready to load in one go.

The website I built for Paul has its own case study: Smart Payment Solutions.

How much does custom software cost?

Custom software is priced after a free 15-minute call, with no "from" figure. The price depends on what the tool does, how many staff use it and what it connects to.

After the call, I send you a fixed price in writing. You pay half to start and half before it goes live. I'm not VAT registered, so the price is the total.

How a project works

  1. Call.

You tell me the job you want off your team's plate.

  2. Price.

I write down what the tool will do and send a fixed price. You pay half to start.

  3. Build.

Your staff try it before it goes live. Nothing gets added that you didn't ask for.

  4. Launch.

You pay the other half, and the tool goes live for your team.

Most tools take a few weeks, and your quote sets the timescale. Any change after that is quoted in writing first.

After launch, you still deal with me. Looking after the tool is quoted separately, because Care+ covers websites only.

Whose name your accounts are in

The accounts your tool relies on sit in your name, not mine: Google accounts, tools like Xero, and payment accounts like Stripe or SumUp. If you ever move on, you get everything within 10 working days.

Every project gets its own written agreement, which sets out the scope, timings and liability. My terms and privacy policy explain how I work.

Questions about custom software

What are the pros and cons of custom software?

It fits how your team already works and only does what you need. But it costs more up front than a ready-made subscription, and it needs looking after once it's live.

Is custom software worth it for a small business?

Often it isn't. If a ready-made tool does the job, buy it, and if your tools just don't talk to each other, connecting them is a smaller job. It's worth it when nothing on the market fits how your team works. Tell me what you use now, and I'll tell you which fits.
