Keep-Running Check for the PSTN switch-off (coming soon)

The Keep-Running Check is coming soon. It's for small businesses that rely on things that are about to change, such as old phone lines.

I'm Luke Duff, a web designer based in Sunderland. The check is coming soon, and I'd like to know if it's something you'd use.

Two changes that can catch a business out

  • Old phone lines are being switched off.
  • WhatsApp is starting to charge for some business messages.

Old phone lines are being switched off

The old phone network is being switched off. BT Business says: "The PSTN switch-off happens on 31 January 2027." GOV.UK says "by January 2027".

BT names alarms, lift lines, PoS machines and telecare devices. GOV.UK names analogue phones, fire and other alarms, payment terminals, lifts, intercom systems and broadband services. BT also says any remaining services not moved to the new digital network will be lost.

WhatsApp charges: who pays and who doesn't

From 1 October 2026, Meta charges per message on the WhatsApp Business Platform (the API). That's the version tools and systems use to send messages for you.

Meta's pages don't say the free WhatsApp Business app is charged. I'm not saying it is. Each business phone number gets 1,000 free service messages a month, with no rollover.
