How to Choose the Right Website Design Company in Sunderland: The Smart Business Owner’s Guide

If you’ve read my last post on why Sunderland businesses need a professional website designer, you’ll know why getting this right is so important. But here’s the bigger question: how do you actually choose the right company or person to build your site?

In Sunderland, there are lots of options. From freelancers like me, to agencies, to DIY platforms. Each has pros and cons. But for most small businesses, you don’t just need a site, you need the right partner who understands your goals and won’t disappear once the project is finished. For a wider checklist, see how to choose a web development partner. If you want to know how I work as a local web designer, keep reading.

Start with their work

The first thing I’d do if I were in your shoes is look at their portfolio. Have they built sites for local businesses before? Do those sites look modern, load fast, and work on your phone? If not, that’s a red flag. A good designer should be proud to show you live examples.

Ask about the process

Good design isn’t just about pretty colours. It’s about understanding your customers, your goals, and mapping out a plan. Ask your potential designer: how will you gather my requirements? What’s the timeline? How many rounds of changes are included? If they can’t explain clearly, they might not have a process.

When you ask me, the answers are written down. I give a fixed price in writing before work starts, and a standard site takes 3 to 6 weeks. You see a private preview link before anything goes live, and two rounds of changes are included. You can read how I build small business websites for the full picture.

Don’t ignore SEO

A site can look nice and still be hard to find. Ask your designer how they handle the things that help people find you on Google: mobile responsiveness, speed, page titles and descriptions, and local search. Nobody can promise you a ranking, so be wary of anyone who does. What a good designer can do is build the site so search engines can read it properly.

Support and training

Once your site is live, will you be left to figure everything out yourself? Or will they offer ongoing support, and show you how to edit pages yourself if you want to? This matters a lot more than people think. The last thing you want is a designer who disappears the second they’ve been paid.

Value, not just price

I understand budgets are tight. But the cheapest option can end up costing you more if you have to redo the work later, so look at what you get for the price. Ask what is included, what is extra and who owns the site at the end. A website is something you’ll rely on for years, and a quote that spells everything out is a good sign.
